gula matari

man. so today one anoying thing happened, then another, then an awesome thing, which led to another awesome thing, and that leads us to where we find me now.

so i went to get a haircut. so i got into my car and I made my way to the bucktown barber, only to find that he, like most any barber in the city, was closed on sunday. unfortunately, i didn’t think about this being almost a cardinal rule of barbering, so I wandered around the entire goshdarn city to find a barber. but first i went to filter to see if maybe i could have lunch there and a sip of coffee and do a bit of reading, but being a crappy day and all the hippies can’t hang out in the park, they have to go to filter. oh well. so it was packed and I left, and began wanering around trying to find a place to cut my shaggy hair. all i really want is to get it cleaned up. out from around the ears and get a straight line on the back of my neck, instead of that weird snaky thing growing down the left side. yuck. but i could not find any barbershops that were open- though I did find several closed. to be honest i found an open salon.. but I’m not the salon type of a guy you know.. but that’s two of the annoying things, here we get to the awesome thing.

i spotted a record store that I had only heard about but not yet seen. dusty grooves america, its called. it’s a hip-hop, soul, jazz, funk store. So i popped in and went straight to the Jazz J section, trying to find a copy of the so far impossible to find Gula matari by Quincy Jones. And I found it. I think I even said something outloud like.. “AWESOME!!!!!!” or at least a quiet, under my breath “rad…” so I bought it for 9 dollars and eighty cents, a steal for sure. and I came home. and I put it on. and i turned it way up, and i proceeded to listen to it several times in a row. everything about it is awesome.

completely, totally, awesome.

the first track is bridge over troubled water, perhaps one of the post often covered songs that wasn’t written by the beatles. well, I can only think of Johnny Cash and this, but I am confident there are hundreds more. It is so good. I am still listening to it now. The title track is on now.

I just did a bit of research to see how often that song was covered. it’s hard to say, because a lot of people did it several times on several albums, and the coversproject.com is a bit difficult to navigate. But on allmusic.com a search of that title brought about 420 hits. So there we go.

my keyboard is at a downward angle, so i am typing like the girl in queens of the stone age plays her keyboard. so there you go. that band is not very good, i don’t think. i saw them on saturday night live, ,which i know isnt a great way to hear a band, but i still did not like it. so there you go.

i am so hungry. i have not eaten today and yesterday all I really had was an egg sandwich and a slice of pizza. so I’m not working with much. I should take care of business. i cannot believe the weekend is over so soon. man oh man, i feel like i didn’t even do anything. oh well, thats how it goes sometimes. maybe most times. anyhow, one last thing before i post this. i love how the singing is on this album, when its not the women singing, when its that cool captain beefheart style. what do you call that? it rules pretty hard.
